How Waldorf Academics Unfold
Waldorf academics are built to deepen by stage. In the early years, the foundation is laid through observation, imitation, imaginative play, movement, language, and sensory-rich experiences. As students grow, academics become more explicit and demanding, while remaining connected to art, movement, practical work, and lived experience.
Across the school, students encounter strong work in reading, writing, math, science, literature, history, languages, and the arts. The goal is not only skill development, but a fuller educational experience that engages thinking, feeling, and doing.
Core Academic Foundations
Live Oak’s academic journey includes reading, writing, math, science, literature, history, language study, and other core subjects, taught in ways that are developmentally grounded and often artistically integrated. Students also engage in music, handwork, practical arts, movement, and other experiences that broaden the school day and deepen engagement.
Early Childhood
Early Childhood at Live Oak creates a nurturing environment in which teachers and parents gently guide the young child through observation, imitation, and discovery that lay the foundational seeds for later learning. Warm classroom spaces invite imagination, and the school’s 40-acre campus provides ample opportunity to explore the natural world.
These years are not centered on rushing abstract academics. Instead, the foundations for later reading, writing, math, and academic engagement are supported through rhythm, play, story, artistic experience, meaningful adult activity, and outdoor life.

Elementary Grades (1–5)
In the elementary years, students’ imaginations are strong and their intellectual capacities are blossoming. All subject areas are introduced through experiential and artistic means. Beginning in first grade, students start their mornings with a two-hour Main Lesson block devoted to math, language arts, science, and literature.
In addition to core academics, students take Spanish, music, fine art, practical art, handwork, eurythmy, movement and games, and drama. This creates an elementary program in which academic growth and artistic engagement are intentionally woven together.
Middle School Grades (6–8)
In the middle school years, students are met with a rigorous study of science, math, history, and language arts that is relevant to their developmental stages. The curriculum sets a high standard and develops inquiry, reasoning, and growing independence across disciplines.
Main Lesson blocks may include subjects such as physics, astronomy, geometry, algebra, the fall of Rome, the Silk Road, and the U.S. civil rights movement. Cyber Civics is also taught weekly to all middle school students to help them become ethical, safe, and productive digital citizens.
